Plan for Summer

Meet your goals with a summer plan

Taking classes during the summer can be a smart strategy to meet your goals for your degree timeline. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss the best options for summer coursework for you.

At IU Bloomington

  • Enrollment for spring and summer terms open at the same time. See your Enrollment Date for summer in your Student Center or iGPS Plan to find out when you can start enrolling. For most students, you can begin enrolling for summer starting in November.
  • Use Class Registration to view upcoming summer course offerings.
  • See the Official Academic Calendar for exact session dates, as well as important registration, drop, and refund deadlines.
  • See Student Central on Union to estimate tuition and fees for summer courses.

At other Indiana University Campuses

  • Apply to other IU Campuses as a visiting or temporary transfer student.
  • Go to Class Registration, and click the settings icon in the top-right of the screen to change your "Institution" see course offerings at other IU campuses.
  • Use the IU Online website to find online course offerings.
  • Meet with your advisor to make sure the course will count toward your Bloomington degree.
  • Call the orientation office for the campus where you intend to take summer classes. You could be required to attend an orientation program/event or be required to complete placement exams in math, foreign language or English composition.
  • You do not need to reapply to return to Bloomington if you applied as a visiting (or temporary) intercampus transfer.
  • You do not need to have a copy of your summer transcript sent to Bloomington. You have one IU transcript for all campuses attended.

At non-IU Colleges or Universities

Advising & Major Exploration Services does not encourage or discourage you from taking courses on at a non-IU institution. Please keep the following in mind:
  • You are responsible for understanding how coursework taken elsewhere will impact your degree progress, academic standing, and potential for success at IU Bloomington.
  • Use the Credit Transfer Service to find out how classes you plan to take at another institution will transfer back to IU Bloomington.
  • Course not in CTS database? Complete the Credit Transfer Agreement Form by the listed deadline.
  • Make sure you understand IU's Credit Transfer Policies.
  • Or, for math courses, complete the Math Transfer Evaluation Form. The evaluation process may take 3-4 weeks.
  • Need authorization to enroll or enrollment verification?
  • AMES advisors can provide confirmation that IU has no policy barring students from taking guest courses at other institutions, but cannot provide documentation of a student's official IU record or guarantee how a course will articulate when transferred back to IU Bloomington.
Arrange to have the transcript from your summer school sent to the IU Bloomington Office of Admissions as soon as grades are posted for your summer course or course(s).
