Below are some questions and resources to guide your research.

Be sure to keep track of the resources you use and the contact information for the people you meet. Take careful notes. You will want to refer to this information throughout your exploration.

What do I enjoy studying?

Use the resources available to IU to explore programs that may interest you.

Meet with an Advising & Major Exploration Services advisor to tell them about what you enjoy studying and what subjects you do well in. They will give you advice about what majors match these interests and skills. If you are having trouble navigating through online resources, see a Peer Academic Coach for help.

Talk with professors and associate instructors about why they chose to pursue that academic field. Do you relate to their passion for the discipline?

Talk with classmates and students in the major about why they chose to pursue the major. Can you see yourself in what they say?

What types of work do I find satisfying?

Career exploration in your first year is critical to making the most of your college experience.

Use the assessment tools on the Career Exploration and Student Employment (CESE) website to better understand your values, interests, personality, and skills as they relate to your education and career. Discuss your assessment results with people you trust and who know you, like family and friends, to get help with how to share your values and interests.

Explore the CESE Career Guides to find interesting career fields and learn about related majors.

Then turn to those with the expertise to guide you in discovering potential majors and related careers that match you and your goals. Meet with your CESE career coach. Tell them about your career goals and the types of work you have enjoyed. They will coach you on how your major choice relates to your professional development.
